Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A kris (keris) with a curving serpentine blade in two tones of metal and an intricate wooden handle. The curved handle, carved from a caramel-hued hardwood, displays two delicate zoomorphic faces at its lower end and under the curve of its hilt. The guard is shaped like a half-dome with eight faceted amethyst stones between two circular rows of dotted designs. The double-sided blade has wavy, multi-colored bands of metal with two slender and parallel fang-shaped grooves near the top. The sheath is comprised of a removable hammered metal jacket with repeating floral designs which houses a lengthy carved wooden casing. Size with sheath: 20" L (50.8 cm); length of blade: 15.5" L (39.4 cm).
