South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive, finely carved wooden panel featuring the elephant-headed deity Ganesha (also spelled Ganesh), the Lord of Good Fortune standing upon his vahana (vehicle) a rat, holding broken tusk in one hand, and flanked by celestial beings. The ensemble rests on an integral lotus pedestal within the standard decorative arch with a lion face (kirttimukha) above Ganesha. Ganesha is known as the Lord of Plenty or the god of auspiciousness, highly revered as the regulator of all obstacles with the power to create and remove them.
