Description:

South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful sterling silver peacock vessel resting upon an integral pedestal base. The flower in the bird's beak has an opening which serves as the spout, and behind the tail fan is a threaded cap with a loop for filling the bird with scented water. In some regions of India, especially in Muslim societies, it was custom to sprinkle refreshing and perfumed water on guests in welcome and on worshipers during religious festivals. Pretty vessels such as this could be used for that purpose and as decorative display items.
