Description:

Central Asia, Azerbaijan & Iran region, Turkic / Shahsevan culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large rectangular panel flat-woven from wool using the soumak tapestry technique that almost resembles embroidery - like kilim style, but stronger. This textile may have once been part of a saddle bag or rug used by the semi-nomadic people of the Eastern Caucasus region - and the ending warp and weft fibers were cut just before the finished edge. The supplementary weft threads are wrapped over warp that strengthen and add density to the textile to withstand heavy use - the soumak weaving was widely used by semi-nomadic tribes that transported their possessions in woven saddle bags made up of textiles similar to this panel. Size: 41" L x 32" W (104.1 cm x 81.3 cm)
