South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful painted elephant wood carving with a hollow storage cavity with a lid on the back, and the base is stands upon may have once been wheeled. This is large enough for a toddler to sit on - perhaps a child's toy for a home or public use in a temple to occupy children while their parents attended worship and to store other trinkets.   • Condition: Old repairs and restoration, tusk tip and tail are a different piece of wood. Legs have been repaired with nails and adhesive, reattached to the stand and body, visible break lines on each leg. Surface wear and abrasions, losses to wood, and chips / stable pressure fissures. Wear and chipping to painted pigments. Modern brass knob feet added to base. Comes with a modern acrylic display case. Crack to one corner.
