Description:

South Asia, India, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely cast bronze spouted vessel known as a kendi, resting on a foot with an upturned lion head that the tubular spout emerges from and a chased ridge encircling the body just below the neck. This form of ritualistic ewer was used to hold and pour holy water collected from sacred rivers to purify one's self. Kendi also appear as attributes held by Hindu gods and various figures in Buddhism. Historically Asiatic lions ranged nearly entirely across India and into Bangladesh- these magnificent felines were associated with Shiva and other deities- their likeness symbolizing protection and valor. Size: 5" Diameter x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm)
