Description:

Native American / First Nations, British Columbia, Canada or southern Alaska, USA, Haida or Tsimshian, ca. 19th century CE. A handsome, large deer bone pipe with a fantastical form. The stem of the pipe widens out into a squared-off cylinder, decorated with the relief legs of a quadruped. Extending from the front of the stem is the bowl, which is carved with a relief anthropomorphic face with emphasized enormous, bulging eyes. The mouthpiece is a flattened tab shape. Taken in total, the shape of the pipe suggests a human figure transforming into the body of an animal. Size: 9.1" W x 1.8" H (23.1 cm x 4.6 cm); 5.45" H (13.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Richardson collection, East Coast, USA; ex-Richardson Museum, Masschusetts, USA
