Description:

Native American, Alaska, Kuskokwim River, probably Alaskan Athabaskans, ca. 19th century CE. A skillfully carved wooden bowl with tiered interior walls that create a lower basin - all adorned in red and black pigment - the tondo resembling a target pattern - with an incised fretted interior rim. A "grease bowl" would have been the treasured belonging of an individual, made to be used on a daily basis to hold oil rendered from fish or seal blubber and used to garnish food like dried meat or fish. Size: 9.125" in diameter x 2.375" H (23.2 cm x 6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Old New England, USA private collection, acquired in the 1950s
