Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Spanish Colonial influence, ca. 1890 CE. A pretty, hand-carved wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary in Mourning. She stands in a pious pose, with her hands pressed together at her chest in prayer. Her robe is dark blue, with a yellow cloak, naturalistically carved; her hair is also detailed and demonstrates the skill of the artist. She stands on a multi-tiered pedestal. Santo figures from the Philippines are part of their Spanish Colonial heritage. Size: 5.45" W x 14.7" H (13.8 cm x 37.3 cm)

Provenance: ex Kurquhill's Gallery, El Paso, Texas, USA; ex private El Paso, Texas, USA collection, acquired early to mid 1970s
