Description:

Europe, Italy or Germany, ca. mid-19th century CE. A unique devotional reliquary of Saint Mark the Evangelist holding/presenting his Gospel. His visage and hand was finely painted on metal in a rather veristic style. The remainder of the image was meticulously hand-stitched from gilded threads to create a low-relief effect. Created by a nun who invested a great deal of time, effort, and energy into her work and received monetary gifts from patrons of her convent in order to complete this opulent tribute. One cannot help but appreciate the handiwork that went into the delineation of Saint Mark's halo, gospel, billowing sleeve, and oval bodice. A very rare work of religious art set upon a red velvet backing and surrounded by a gold-toned wooden frame. Suspension loop on backside. Size: 7.25" L x 6.25" W (18.4 cm x 15.9 cm) in frame; relic itself measures 4" L x 3.75" W (10.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
