Description:

Europe, Italy or Germany, ca. mid-19th century CE. A unique devotional reliquary of a round form containing twenty-nine bones belonging to saints arranged in two rows surrounding a larger, medallion-like applique in the center, all hand-stitched to a red velvet backing. Each of the twenty-nine roundels is set within a circular applique that is trimmed with round beads and gilded threads. The central roundel is also meticulously hand-stitched from gilded threads to create a low-relief petaled flower motif with a coiled metal trim that is in turn surrounded by loosely plaited gilded yarns. This piece was created by a nun who invested a great deal of time, effort, and energy into her work and received monetary gifts from patrons of her convent in order to complete this opulent tribute. One cannot help but appreciate the handiwork that went into the delineation of this complex composition. A very rare work of religious art. Size: 6.5" in diameter (16.5 cm)
