Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Europe, probably northwestern Europe, Neo-Gothic period, ca. 19th century CE. An ornately carved marble cap to a column, designed to be fitted using the large projecting tab on its back end into a slot. One half of a complete column is present; the rest would have been inset into the wall, creating a line of embedded columns. Floral and scrollwork motifs recall Gothic columns in cathedrals, which were in turn inspired by the architecture of the Classical period. During the 19th century, particularly in northwestern Europe, church architecture looked back to the medieval period, and the neo-Gothic or Gothic Revival style appeared in cathedrals and other grand buildings like the British Houses of Parliament. Size: 6" L x 5.1" W x 6.75" H (15.2 cm x 13 cm x 17.1 cm)
