Description:

Western Europe, probably southern France / northern Italy, Spain, or Portugal, ca. 19th century CE. A fascinating wooden storage container with a sunburst motif carved on one side and a key included. This chest was probably made to hold religious items or possibly to serve as a small shrine, with front and back that lock and can open; it was once lined with silk and may have been used to display reliquaries or hold the Holy Eucharist. The chest stands on four lion-paw style feet. Its four sides flare outward from its square base, then angle back, so that the chest appears to have a roof atop it. A round column rises from the highest point of the chest. The body is fully decorated with sun and floral patterns and incised lines that form a fish-skin like carved texture, contributing to the Eucharist theme. Size: 11.9" L x 18.75" W x 23.25" H (30.2 cm x 47.6 cm x 59.1 cm)
