Description:

Europe, probably Italy, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden reliquary shrine with chambered doors that open to reveal three separate chambers. Inside of each is a place for a relic decorated by handmade, incredibly ornate metallic threads woven into fiddlehead-like motifs and trimmed with gilded lace and small glass and thread jewels and flowers. From left to right, the chambers have painted textile portraits of St. George (Georgius), the Virgin and Child, and St. Lawrence (Laurenti) of Rome. Each presumably contains a small fragment of the remains of these saints, or what was purported to be their remains. Shrines like these were often made by nuns, especially in Italy, and sold to worshippers when they visited places of pilgrimages. Size: 3.3" L x 13.75" W x 9.5" H (8.4 cm x 34.9 cm x 24.1 cm)
