Description:

Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, Gurage people, ca. late 19th to mid 20th century CE. A large and beautifully carved wooden serving platter for injera, a type of flat bread. The tray is supported by a concave base that is intricately carved with linear motifs. The underside and exterior of the tray lip is also decorated with linear patterns. The tray has a low rim and a flat surface for serving. The wood has developed a pretty red-brown patina. Two perforations through the top with a cord enabled this bowl to be hung, perhaps on a wall to display the beautiful designs when not in use. Size: 20.75" W x 5" H (52.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
