Native American, Alaska, Eskimo, Kusco Kwim River region, ca. 19th century to early 20th century CE. Doll making has been an Alaskan tradition for centuries. This example features a body that was probably made from seal skin or polar bear hide and is stitched together with cotton string. The carved wooden face depicts a male with a black painted coiffure and a mustache, bone labrets (lip plugs), incised teeth and slanted oval eyes. Wrapped around his neck is a cotton bandana of pink, purple, turquoise blue, and beige hues. Dolls like this example were usually created to show a daily activity such as gathering berries or, as was most likely the case for this doll, performing a ritualistic dance. Size: 11.25" H (28.6 cm)
