East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. This is an elegant folding brise fan made of tortoiseshell with a silk ribbon and glass inlays on the handle. The sticks are stacked at the base, held together with a rivet and ring handle that contains a bezel on both ends inlaid with a faceted piece of translucent glass. The ribbon is woven through the slits on the top of each slat and sticks are each pierced and shallow carved into an intricate garden and figurative composition that displays as a full scene when splayed out, and the guard panel is low relief carved with a dragon. The fan is mounted in a protective wood and glass frame with the 16 remaining intact sticks spread for full effect. - Condition: One slat has losses to wide end, and the fan is arranged in the case with this slat hidden behind another. Missing 2 sticks slats completely but does not affect overall presentation of fan. Remains of glue adhesive next to each silk ribbon on shell surface. Tiny chips to tip of one slat and stable fissures to several others. Chips to glass inlay on handle. Mounted and displayed in glass and wood case on a silk backing.
