East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic period, Miao people, ca. 20th century CE. An elaborate ceremonial headdress worn by Miao girls and women during weddings and festivals, comprised of a red cloth base with intricately sewn decoration in a variety of vibrant colors, all wrapped and surmounted by nickel silver adornments of flowers, sword-wielding horse riders, birds, a horned shield, and conical bangles. Glass beads further embellish the interior of each flower. Size without birds: 7" Diameter x 7.125" H (17.8 cm x 18.1 cm); with birds: 10.5" W x 7.9" H (26.7 cm x 20.1 cm)
