Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th century CE. A lovely folding brise fan made of bovine bone and ribbon. The 30 individual slats of bone are stacked at the base, held together with an iron rivet and a silk ribbon woven through the top. A tin loop handle articulates on the rivet with a decorative white silk tassel and the bone is pierced with a floral motif to give the appearance of lace when splayed out. Folding fans were invented in Japan before making their way to China and later into Europe. Through the 18th and 19th century, bone and ivory fans were primarily made for export to European countries and were highly valued among ladies for their folding convenience and delicate patterns! Size (folded): 7.8" L x 1.25" W (19.8 cm x 3.2 cm); (fanned out): 7.8" L x 13" W (19.8 cm x 33 cm)
