Description:

Western Asia, Dagestan Region, located on the northwestern shores of the Caspian Sea, ca. 1500 to 500 BCE. A bronze idol, anthropomorphic in form, made to show a human with oversized hands that are raised to the sides of the head and touch the ears. The hands are turned outward to face the viewer, with giant palms and fingers. Otherwise the figure presents a torso with a rope-like strap across the chest and around the waist, delineated male genitalia, broad hips, knobby knees, and a face with modeled features. This particular style of idol comes from the Caucasus, a little-studied region, with most academic studies done in Russian. These small bronze figures are part of an incredibly long artistic tradition, similar in form to those made of clay during the Neolithic period. Burials from this period also contain a tremendous number of weapons, and scholars believe that gods related to military prowess. Size: 1.875" W x 3.125" H (4.8 cm x 7.9 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.
