East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A ceramic pillow, blue on white glazed- scrolling clouds framing a pair of gold fish in a pond with aquatic plants. The ends have bold and linear auspicious character symbols. Head rests such as this were used for elevating the neck, protecting elaborate hairstyles, and materials such as pottery or stoneware were chosen for their cooling properties. Size: 10.5" L x 5" W x 5.5" H (26.7 cm x 12.7 cm x 14 cm)
