Description:

East Asia, China, Late Qing Dynasty era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An opium or tobacco water pipe featuring a bamboo reservoir with brass fittings. The brass components include a conical receptacle and a stem holder, which supports a curved wooden stem with a brass mouthpiece. The stem would draw smoke through the water in the pipe's reservoir, cooling it before reaching the smoker. The pipe is mounted in a modern wood and glass shadow box display case. Behind the pipe, sheets of paper with columns of black calligraphy and red imperial seals are displayed. Size of pipe: 14" L x 3" W (35.6 cm x 7.6 cm); frame: 15" L x 4" W x 25" H (38.1 cm x 10.2 cm x 63.5 cm)
