East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful carved chalcedony-agate dish with openwork leafy branches along the exterior and extending across the basin. The dish rests upon a matching wood base that was made specifically for the dish and has a similar vine and foliage pattern carved from wood. This may have been an ink well or water bowl for brushes used in painting or calligraphy. Traditionally artists and scholars surrounded themselves with beautiful objects made from stone and wood as inspiration for their work. Size: 5.5" L x 3.25" W x 2" H (14 cm x 8.3 cm x 5.1 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Arlington, Texas, USA collection, acquired mid to late-1960s
