East Asia, China, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A charming carved wooden plaque depicting two relief figures dressed in traditional Chinese clothing. The standing figures converse, the taller stroking his beard and the shorter holding a large vase with flowers. The round plaque has a small, trapezoidal projection from its lower portion with an incised, swirling motif. The figures are painted gold, while the background of the piece is red. Size: 12.8" W x 15.3" H (32.5 cm x 38.9 cm)
