Description:

**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. Wow, one of my favorites! A wonderful, ornately carved wooden panel, possibly a window shutter, featuring three openwork sections, each set within a deep frame, and each depicting high relief artwork. The upper features two deer; the lower features a scene of plants in planters and a fountain. The largest composition, in the center, contains a scene of a palace with two scholarly or noble figures looking down upon a scene of warriors - possibly in battle or possibly in a tournament. One lower side projects outward in a short tab, suggesting that the form may have been a shutter made to be set in a window frame. Size: 17.6" W x 41.6" H (44.7 cm x 105.7 cm)

  • Condition: Light wear on surface commensurate with age, including some scratches, chips, and nicks. The wood is weathered, especially on the upper and lower parts, with some small cracks and losses. There are two small areas on one side where it looks like the shutter originally pressed against something and indented the wood.
