Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved sculpture of a Buddha seated in half lotus position atop an elephant, all adorned in red, black, tan, and gray pigments atop white gesso. Dressed in a lavish red robe with a yellow floral motif, the figure leans to his right, supporting his head with his right hand as his left grabs his leg. Size: 9.5" W x 18.5" H (24.1 cm x 47 cm)

Provenance: private Bemidji, Minnesota, USA collection, acquired June 16, 2002; ex-private North York, Ontario, Canada collection
