Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved alabaster stone Buddha statue in full lotus position upon an integral ovoid pedestal, with his hands forming the "earth witness" Bhumisparsha mudra; one hand resting palm up in his lap and the other touching the ground. He sits upright with elongated ears touching his rounded shoulders, and the face has simple features; eyes gazing forward under thin arched brows, and a slight smile. A ushnisha with a pointed spire adorns this Buddha's head, symbolizing the power of his enlightenment. The alabaster is highly polished to a silky-smooth surface, and is painted with red, orange, black, and glimmering gilt highlights - these pigments were perhaps added at a later time and touched up over the years. Size: 8.75" L x 4.5" W x 13.5" H (22.2 cm x 11.4 cm x 34.3 cm)
