Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma/Myanmar, ca. 19th century CE. A tall carved and gilded wood statue, with painted facial features and ornate carved clothing and jewelry. A blue crystal is set into the figure's chest. The figure has short hair in a top knot and stands one arm extended, palm facing upwards, in a welcoming stance. Small holes through the ears hold little earrings. The figure stands atop a round, dark red base. This is a depiction of a nat, a spirit worshiped in Burma alongside Buddhism. These figures are mountain and forest guardians, or village guardians, and each village has a unique one; they are said to be humans who met violent deaths, and they have human wants and needs. This means that they are flawed figures, often with taboo desires, in opposition to the worship of the Buddha. This one has a calm, friendly face. Size: 5.45" W x 15.7" H (13.8 cm x 39.9 cm)
