Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wooden guardian figure from a culture with an esteemed tradition of wood carving. The figure has a long face, with a prominent nose and incised eyes. The body is slender, with a very narrow waist and wider torso and hips and a prominent phallus. Breasts that appear female are carved into the chest. Carvers in this culture were generally men, and skill in carving was a token of refinement that would indicate that the man was ready for marriage. Size: 3.85" W x 29.8" H (9.8 cm x 75.7 cm); 31.05" H (78.9 cm) on included custom stand.
