Anonymous (American, active XIX century). Drawing study for Harper's Magazine. Pencil on paper, ca. 19th century. Inscribed "Harper's" at lower left. A fascinating drawing likely intended as a study for a cartoon in "Harper's Magazine," the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the United States. The composition shows a bearded man cooking before a shadowed figure as others sleep in the background. Set behind glass in custom matte and frame with a suspension wire on verso for display. Size of drawing: 9.5" W x 6.75" H (24.1 cm x 17.1 cm); of frame: 18.3" W x 15.7" H (46.5 cm x 39.9 cm)

  • Condition: Inscribed "Harper's" at lower left. Set behind glass in custom matte and frame; has not been examined outside of glass. Small stain to paper in lower right and slight smudge at lower left, but otherwise clear imagery with good preservation of detail. Some scuffs and nicks to frame and foxing to board backing on verso; none of which affect image. Suspension wire on verso for display.
