Description:

Susanne Nyberg (American, b. 1953). "Hawk Family" oil on canvas, ca. 1980. Signed on lower left. A captivating painting of three hawks living in the Arizona desert by American artist Susanne Nyberg. The hawks Nyberg depicts are most likely Ferruginous hawks, gorgeous raptors that inhabit the prairies and deserts of Arizona and are the largest of all North American hawks, with very impressive wing spans. Nyberg depicts one hawk alighting onto a large cactus plant, another already perched atop the cactus, and a third flying toward them with outstretched wings. In addition, she skillfully invites the viewer into the scene via a meandering path at the center of the composition, and pays homage to the incredible desert flora in all its variety of form and color, beneath a dreamy western sky. Finally, Nyberg captures the beauty of the land and its charming inhabitants with her signature expressive brushwork and impasto. Size: 20" L x 24" W (50.8 cm x 61 cm)

Susanne Nyberg was raised in Massachusetts, later moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Arizona. In Boston, she studied at the Art Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and in Washington, D.C. she studied at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. This said, perhaps her greatest influence was artist Bill Freeman, the prominent Western landscape painter whom she met when she moved to Arizona early in her career. Freeman would become her mentor and close friend. Nyberg is best known for her impressively realistic oil and palette knife plein air landscape paintings. She and her husband have lived in the scenic Arizona desert in a small town called Carefree for most of their lives.

According to Nyberg's artist statement, "Susanne Nyberg’s artistic inspiration comes from the Arizona mountains where she lives. Whether she is painting realistic landscapes, or abstract paintings that incorporate minerals and gems mined from the mountains, the natural beauty of her surroundings compels her to create art."
