Susanne Nyberg (American, b. 1953). Oil on canvas, 1981. Signed and dated "S. Nyberg '81" on lower right. A stunning landscape painting of the Arizona desert and mountains created by American artist Susanne Nyberg. The composition is delineated via Nyberg's expressive brushwork and meticulous palette knife work. The desert light dramatically illuminates the mountainsides and desert brush as well as cacti below, presenting a melange of periwinkle, lavender, lemon yellow, sage, and spring green hues. A soft golden glow bridges the mountaintops with the azure skies above. According to Nyberg's artist statement, "Susanne Nybergs artistic inspiration comes from the Arizona mountains where she lives. Whether she is painting realistic landscapes, or abstract paintings that incorporate minerals and gems mined from the mountains, the natural beauty of her surroundings compels her to create art." Susanne Nyberg was raised in Massachusetts, later moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Arizona. In Boston, she studied at the Art Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and in Washington, D.C., she studied at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. This said, perhaps her greatest influence was artist Bill Freeman, the prominent Western landscape painter whom she met when she moved to Arizona early in her career. Freeman would become her mentor and close friend. Nyberg is best known for her impressively realistic oil and palette knife plein air landscape paintings. She and her husband have lived in the scenic Arizona desert in a small town called Carefree for most of their lives.
