Description:

Native American, Southwest, Hopi, ca. 1960s CE. A Hopi Kachina hand-painted and carved cottonwood root rendering of the clown deity painted with his characteristic black and white horizontal striped face, body, and costume as well as black eyes and mouth. His hair is parted in the center and bound in two horn-like sections that stand up on each side of his head. A bit of the corn husk detailing at the tips remains. He also dons a black cloth tie around his neck and black yarns around his wrists. His blue waist wrap is adorned with vertical sections (painted black, turquoise, and white) at front and back. This example presents fine detailing, particularly of the beautifully delineated fingers of the clenched fists, and bold, expressive painting of this 'Pueblo Clown' or 'Sacred Clown' of the Kachina religion. The figure represents a jester or trickster that engages in rituals of the various Pueblo peoples. When a Size: 6.25" W x 12.75" H (15.9 cm x 32.4 cm)
