Description:

Native American, Southwest, Shiprock, New Mexico, Navajo, ca. 1940 CE. A handwoven wool Yei pattern rug from the area of Shiprock, New Mexico, handwoven in multicolors with anthropomorphic and geometric imagery. Yei pattern rugs depict imagery of holy personages inspired by the figures on ceremonial Navajo sand paintings. As in this example, the Yeis are abstract figures oriented parallel with the weft threads, with elongated torsos, short straight legs, and frontally facing heads. This example features two central figures and surrounding them, one Rainbow God whose body becomes a red, white, and blue border and resolves to feet laterally opposite to its head. Rugs created in the area of Shiprock, New Mexico usually present lighter colored backgrounds with no border as we see here. Closely related to Yei rugs are Yeibechai rugs that depict Navajo dancers portraying Yeis in ritual ceremonies. Size: 31" W x 34.125" H (78.7 cm x 86.7 cm)
