Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1939 CE. Hand-painted on heavy gauge tin, this ex-voto depicts a procession carrying an altarpiece for the Virgin Mary with the church of Soledad in Oaxaca in the background, and the blessed Virgin herself hovering above the scene. The inscription, dated 1939, describes the situation: a husband prays for his wife's recovery from childbirth and dedicates the altarpiece to the church. These votive paintings were hung in a church or home in order to celebrate and give thanks for the recovery of an individual from an illness or dangerous situation. A wonderful ex-voto, mounted in an attractive frame and ready to display. Size (ex-voto): 11.6" L x 8.375" W (29.5 cm x 21.3 cm); (frame): 15" L x 11.75" W (38.1 cm x 29.8 cm)
