Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa), Depression Era, ca. 1930s CE. A beautiful, rare, and wearable necklace featuring dozens of white shell cylindrical beads with 20 teardrop shaped dangling beads and a large pendant, all comprised of animal bone with turquoise and plastic mosaic inlay. Made from found materials, the black inlay is likely formed from car batteries or phonorecords, while the red may be from Dairy Queen spoons, Woolworth's dinner plates, or hair combs. In Santo Domingo Pueblo’s long jewelry-making tradition, skills pass through generations, with jewelry-making a family craft. For pieces from this era, as much effort went into using headbands, plates, or even Dairy Queen spoons as into refining the finest, most costly blood-red coral. These plastics offered a chance to affordably recreate beloved designs with creatively sourced materials. Size of pendant: 1.8" W x 2.1" H (4.6 cm x 5.3 cm); of necklace: 18.6" L (47.2 cm)

After developing their distinctive and innovative jewelry-making techniques, the residents embraced the opportunities that came their way. The people of Santo Domingo Pueblo have long shown resilience and adaptability, a trait honed over centuries of responding to environmental challenges. Frequent flooding of the Rio Grande prompted the pueblo to relocate multiple times, including moves before 1591, in 1605, and again until settling in 1886. Over time, progress and growing tourism influenced the pueblo’s placement near the railroad and the bustling highway connecting Albuquerque and Santa Fe, an ideal location for trade.
