Description:

New World, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 18th century CE. A finely-carved wooden writing desk, perhaps made for a child due to the diminutive size. The desk has four rectangular legs with bulb-shaped feet and each with a few carved rings, a rectangular writing surface comprised of two planks, and a small drawer with a petite drilled opening for a handle. Though originally used for writing, the top of the desk now exhibits hundreds of small gouge marks which suggest it was repurposed as possibly a woodwork or crafting table. Most of the surfaces are coated in a smooth and lustrous patina, and the inside of the drawer face is embellished with green paint. Size: 13" L x 20.25" W x 11.875" H (33 cm x 51.4 cm x 30.2 cm).
