Description:

Russia, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine Russian icon depicting the Archangel Michael painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood. Valiantly riding a horse and holding his traditional attributes (a sword and spear) as Chief Commander of the Heavenly hosts, Saint Michael tramples over flames which symbolize the Devil. Satan, after all, was Michael's opponent in the battle for Heaven. The entire scene is set in an abstract landscape. The figures' gestures and motion are characteristically pantomime-like, indicative of the Russian admiration for Byzantine art. A fine example! Size: 10.5" L x 8.75" W (26.7 cm x 22.2 cm)
