Description:

Europe, Spain or Italy, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted wooden Christ figure, depicted in dramatic Baroque style. Though largely nude save for his loin cloth, a red robe cascades behind him. This is the red robe that illustrates the prophecy that the Christ the Savior’s garment will be red when he comes again in the Millennium. Finely carved, Christ's body demonstrates the sculptor's keen study of anatomy. The visage is exquisite with fine facial features, and a solemn expression framed by his cascading, long brunette locks. Beyond the beauty is the powerful iconography of the Christ figure, with his highly symbolic scarlet robe and the prominent lance wound that pierced the side of his chest, one of the five holy wound he endured. A wonderful sculpture displaying the sense of movement and theatrical drama particular to sculpture of the Baroque period. Size: 5.5" W x 12" H (14 cm x 30.5 cm)
