Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely and rare wooden example of a traveling icon - most of those surviving from this period are brass! These were used by priests traveling through the massive and foreboding Russian wilderness to teach about the Orthodox Church. This one has two delicate curved doors that open to reveal a painted image of the Virgin and Child; the interior of the doors bear the Greek letters "XC IX" a widely used four letter abbreviation for Jesus (IHCOYC) Christ (XPICTOC) and Cyrillic signifying the same below them. Close the doors and reveal brilliantly painted imagery of St. Nicholas and St. Michael the Archangel, both shown at the top facing forward and standing and again below astride their horses. Size: 8.25" W x 12" H (21 cm x 30.5 cm)
