Description:

East Asia, Japan, later Edo Period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautifully preserved example of a shogi, a type of folding chair or stool used by samurai, easily transportable by horseback and still comfortable to sit upon when stopped at a camp for the night. The chair is made of two nearly-identical pieces of wood framework, each coated with a thick black lacquer, characteristic of the Edo period. These fit together neatly and are joined at their center on both sides to create a hinge. A leather band across the top forms the seat. Size: 13.05" W x 17.95" H (33.1 cm x 45.6 cm)
