East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A simple ceramic and wooden pillow with a rounded green glazed surface that is supported by a wooden frame and legs. Pillows such as this were used for elevating the neck, and materials such as pottery or stoneware were chosen for their cool surfaces. Many, such as this, were included in burial to ceremoniously indicate domestic possessions. Size: 12.25" L x 6.25" W x 6.5" H (31.1 cm x 15.9 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Mark Clayton collection, Long Beach, California, USA; Mr. Clayton is a noted African expert and collector who recently had Nigerian bronze objects from his collection featured in an exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum entitled "Summoning the Ancestors" (September 2018 - March 2019).

  • Condition: The ceramic has minor chips and scratches across the surface and a shallow indentation on one side. Discoloration from surface wear radiates from one corner across approximately half of one side. The wooden frame is discolored with abrasions along the edges. Overall and attractive as well as sturdy piece showing expected weathering commensurate with age.
