East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 18th to mid-19th century CE. A lacquered iron stirrup known as an "abumi" which was used in warfare by samurai, comprised of a large curved plate with a buckle for attaching to the saddle strap. The openwork and gilt clan symbol known as a "mon" or "kamon," identifies the rider's family and/or patron - the equivalent to a European coat of arms. Size: 12" L x 6" W x 10.5" H (30.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 26.7 cm)

  • Condition: Chipping and losses to lacquered surface - fissures and cracks throughout the paint layers as shown. Actively flaking and stirrup needs to be handled carefully to prevent further losses. Exposed iron has abrasions, stable fissures, patina, and oxidation. Old inventory number on the surface of foot plate. Great remaining gilt.
