Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Inuit, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine pair of hammered copper objects: a harpoon or spear blade and a slender knife or awl like tool. Spear heads like this were attached to lengthy wooden poles via the tang as seen here and used as harpoons when hunting whales or walruses. Awls were used for punching holes through hides for sewing with thick sinew cords. Size of awl: 6.65" L x 0.25" W (16.9 cm x 0.6 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania collection, USA; ex-McLeod collection before 2000
