Description:

South Asia, India, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A wonderful brass statue of a Buddha standing barefoot on a circular plinth and dressed in a rope with a lengthy cape cascading down the left side of his body. Capped with a petaloid finial, the figure's tranquil visage displays large, downcast eyes under an arched brow, a sharp nose, and full lips held in a gentle smile, all flanked by a pair of ears with drooping lobes, which allude to his casting off of earthly wealth. The serene deity holds his right hand up as it displays the Vitarka mudra, the symbol of intellectual discussion and transmission of Buddhist teaching. Size: 2.25" W x 7.25" H (5.7 cm x 18.4 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
