Description:

South Asia, India, New Delhi, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fantastic gathering of five mold-formed terracotta anthropomorphic heads. Included are two women with shawls over their heads, and three men. The naturalistic facial expressions give each face a unique identity; for example, the first woman has a rounded cheerful face with wide eyes and dimples around her mouth. Two of the men have turbans wrapped on their heads, and one wears a four-pointed headdress. Some have nice traces of white pigments indicating these were brightly painted at one time. White is a symbol of purity and holiness, and these heads may be fragments from larger statues that resided in a shrine or temple. Size of large turban head: 1.75" L x 2" W x 2" H (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 5.1 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
