Description:

Western Europe, probably France or Spain, ca. late 18th to first half of the 19th century CE. A lovely carbon-steel signal cannon (also known as an insurance cannon) of a hefty form with a tapered cylindrical body, a knob-form cap on the verso, a flared muzzle, and a petite wick hole on top. The circular fitting around the barrel has two tubular bars that rest in the semicircular grooves of the wooden cart side panels. A pair of brass lock plates fits over the bars, and beneath the back end of the barrel is a four-handled crank that raises or lowers the height of the barrel end. The cart maneuvers on four wooden wheels that are secured via thick wooden pegs. Early freight companies were required to possess a certain amount of artillery to obtain insurance for the transported cargo. Size: 10" L x 7.875" W x 5.3" H (25.4 cm x 20 cm x 13.5 cm); length of cannon barrel: 9.125" L (23.2 cm).
