Description:

Western Europe, France, Napoleonic period, ca. early 19th century CE. A hefty axe used by engineers during the French Napoleonic period. The sturdy wooden handle is decorated with dozens of petite brass pins that form a textured gripping surface, and the top end is inserted into the gradually narrowing socketing shaft of the cast-iron axe head. The curved blade would have been used for shaping wood and other building materials, and the edge still retains a noteworthy sharpness. One side of the blade features a stamped maker's mark reading, "E. Lelievre" with a running, left-facing rabbit. Size: 6.2" W x 27.75" H (15.7 cm x 70.5 cm)
