Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 18th century CE. A gorgeous carnelian intaglio depicting a standing, right-facing figure who plays a double-tube flute-like instrument known as an aulos. The man presents nude save for a series of cords draped over one shoulder, perhaps lions' tails, as he holds the instrument up in the air for all to hear. The slender intaglio is set within the form-fitting bezel of a 62.9% gold ring bearing a thin shank with a slight pinch in the center. Size (intaglio): 0.44" L x 0.19" W x 0.08" H (1.1 cm x 0.5 cm x 0.2 cm); (ring setting): 0.58" L x 0.73" W x 0.79" H (1.5 cm x 1.9 cm x 2 cm); gold quality: 62.9% (equivalent to 15K+); weight: 2.8 grams; US ring size: 5
