Description:

China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 18th century CE. A lacquered and gilded bronze cast Shakyamuni Buddha (Guatama Siddhartha), with a finely contoured face, characteristically elongated ears signifying his wisdom and compassion, and a pronounced ushnisha (top-knot, crown of hair) representing the spiritual power of his enlightenment, hands positioned in the Varada mudra, the gesture symbolizing generosity, seated in full lotus position atop a double lotus throne base. Notice the surviving gilt on the surfaces, as well as the black and red pigment adorning the ushnisha, the red pigment on back of throne, and the lovely natural green patina on the lower areas of exposed bronze. A beautiful example created during the Qing dynasty, the last of the imperial dynasties of China first established in 1636 by the Manchus. Size: 11-1/2" x 8" x 5-1/2" (29.2 x 20.3 x 14 cm)
